Madagascar's labyrinth of stone

Photograph by Stephen AlvarezLiving on a Razor's Edge
By Neil Shea
The lizard moved in frightened rhythms across the sun-blasted stone. A few quick steps, a turn of its boxy head. Then the stillness, the absolute zero, of a creature that sensed it was being hunted. All around, jagged spires and flutes rose like the towers of some Gothic cathedral, silent and empty. From the canyons below, a parrot flew squawking, breaking the trance. The lizard launched. Hery Rakotondravony's arm fired out. Moments later the young herpetologist uncurled his fingers.
"I think this is a new species."

To be honest, we don't like to see people trying to dress up their pets. But the little guy doesn't seem to mind--for now--and it is a great photo.

on destiny

Destiny is something not be to desired and not to be avoided. A mystery not contrary to reason, for it implies that the world, and the course of human history, have meaning.

another Jersey update
Today when Theo woke up he noticed that the towels Jersey used during the night to urinate on had red urine stains...obviously due to blood. He called Habibi and they took him back to the animal hospital immediately. Fortunately the problem doesn't seem too serious. They are not sure what caused it, but an X-ray showed lots of things that it is not.
Jersey is staying overnight and they are hoping to run more tests in the morning. It still may turn out to be something serious, like kidney failure, but for now the vet is hopeful that it's just some anomaly due to all of the medications he's on.
Prayers and "best thoughts" please.

the more things change, the more they stay the same
This undated photo provided by the U.S. Geological Survey shows a USGS biologist working with a polar bear and her cub shortly after the sow was darted for field immobilization work on the ice in Alaska. Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell says he has the best interest of polar bears at heart, but he doesn't intend to let the federal government's expanded protection for bears get in the way of the state's continued prosperity. Like his predecessor, Sarah Palin, the governor is suing the federal government to overturn the listing of the iconic symbol of the Arctic as a threatened species, a move made last year that he believes could threaten Alaska's lifeblood: petroleum development.(AP Photo/ U.S. Geological Survey)

Jersey update
Jersey is slowly doing a lot better. His ear infection is still causing him to be slightly off-balance, but he's no longer tilting his head.
AND, his gastro-intestinal tract seems to be working JUST FINE! (lol)
